Leeds United and Che Adams link has alerted Birmingham City

Che Adams’ stuttering start to his Southampton career has led to inevitable speculation regarding his future.

The 23-year-old was a £15million purchase from Birmingham City last summer and despite a very positive pre-season was caught up in the Saints’ early-season struggles.

He slipped behind Danny Ings and Shane Long in the St Mary’s pecking order and is yet to notch a Premier League goal for his current club.

Last week it was claimed Southampton could look to move on from the former Blues attacker, with Leeds United said to have identified him as a target.

Indeed Football Insider even claimed Saints had accepted a £19m bid from Leeds in the January window – only for Ralph Hasenhuttl to decide to keep Adams.

Whatever happens with the striker Birmingham City will be watching with a keen eye as they negotiated at ten per cent sell-on fee when they struck their deal with Southampton last July.

Adams spent three seasons at St Andrew’s, eventually blossoming into the player they hoped he would become when signing him from Sheffield United in 2016.

The Leicester-born forward finally came good in a partnership with Lukas Jutkiewicz that netted him 22 goals and wrote his name into club history as the biggest ever fee received.

He also came to Leeds' attention in September 2018, lighting up Elland Road with a two-goal salvo in a Blues victory. He also scored against them in the return match in April 2019.

Blues will hope he is a gift that keeps giving if he moves on again this summer – just one of several sell-on clauses they are hoping reaches fruition.

They are still to receive any dividends from the deal that took Jack Butland to Stoke City in 2013 – and with the goalkeeper entering his final year may not despite waiting for so long.

And they have an interest in Demarai Gary’s next move too after selling him to Leicester in January 2016.
